An exciting week for the instructors and students of Bangor's Wing Tzun club as Sifu Frank Kohlhase from Kassel, Germany visited to hold seminars in both, the North and South of Ireland. The goal was to further educate and to test members for their grades in the Wing Tzun system.
Sifu Frank Kohlhase is currently one of only a handful of teachers in EBMAS throughout the world to hold the highly proficient level of 4th technician for Wing Tzun.
This was not the first time Sifu Frank has travelled to Ireland. Since the Bangor Wing Tzun club joined EBMAS (Emin Boztepe Martial Arts System) organization in 2004 Sifu Frank was granted permission by Dai-Sifu Emin Boztepe (founder of EBMAS), to have a direct influence in the development of the members within the UK and Ireland. Since then both instructors and students in numbers have travelled to Germany to seek private tuition from Sifu Frank and have developed a very close friendship over the years.
Sifu Terry Garrick from Harrogate flew over from England especially to train with Ireland's instructors under the guidance of Sifu Frank.
During the private lessons in Dublin and Bangor Sifu Frank explained in depth about the 1st and 2nd Technician Chi-sao programs that are taught in EBMAS.
For two days Sifu Frank taught the Chi-sao programs to insure that the UK & Ireland instructors understood the programs and were able to perform the complicated sections. At any point in the training if any questions arose Sifu Frank was more than able to answer all of them.
The seminar started traditionally with the first form of the Wing Tzun system Siu-Nim-Tao, before moving onto the second and third form.
While performing the Siu-Nim-Tao Sifu Frank moved slowly to ensure all the movement from the form were performed correctly. Sifu Frank explained "If you move too fast then you cannot really feel what you body is doing!"
He continued "By moving slowly you can focus on which parts of the body are performing the movements!"
He questioned "Which muscles groups are being used for the Tan-sao or Bong-sao?" "Which joints are being used for these as well?" "You can only fully understand and get the answers to these questions if you relax and move slowly....!"
After the forms Sifu Frank took everyone back too the basics, simple Wing Tzun hand drills, footwork and the then a combination of both! After a short break Sifu Frank split the students into groups according to their student levels, so he could assess everybody ability.
During the seminar, Sifu Frank watched with a keen eye, as students performed the world renowned Wing Tzun techniques and at the end of the seminar Sifu Frank rewarded students with there certificates for passing the EBMAS exam.
Members that passed their student levels were:
- Charlie Szymanski: 1st
- Peter Murphy: 1st
- David Maginnes: 2nd
- Myles Hastings: 2nd
- Mark Compton: 2nd
- Adam McGready: 2nd
